Fasting as a Path to Piety: Analysis of John Wesley's Thoughts on Spiritual Discipline in Christian Fasting

Abstract

This study aims to analyze John Wesley's thoughts on fasting as a spiritual discipline in the Christian tradition and its relevance in contemporary Christian life in the postmodern era. Wesley viewed fasting as essential to deepening spiritual life, cleansing the soul, and strengthening commitment to God. Using a qualitative research method with a historical approach, this study explores Wesley's teachings on fasting, encompassing theological aspects such as metanoia (repentance), sanctification, and discipleship. According to Wesley, the study finds that fasting is an ascetic act and a tool to overcome worldly temptations and enhance closeness to God. The relevance of Wesley's teachings on fasting in the postmodern era is reinforced by the need to integrate prayer with fasting, train self-control, and seek forgiveness of sins in a society that tends to be materialistic and individualistic. In addition to spiritual benefits, fasting offers physical benefits such as weight control and heart health. Thus, this study concludes that fasting, as part of a living tradition tested by the Word of God and personal experience, remains a dynamic practice that can support spiritual growth and proper spiritual discipline for today's Christians.
